Whitney Young Health’s Community Prevention and Treatment Services (CPTS) Program has been awarded a 4-year grant from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for a new HIV program.
Project COOL (Control Over Our Lives)’s mission is to integrate evidence-based, culturally competent mental and substance use disorder treatment with HIV primary care and prevention services. The patient population this program will focus on individuals with a serious mental illness or co-occuring disorder living with or at risk for HIV and/or Hepatitis C, including racial and ethnic minority communities.
The priority areas of Project COOL are:
- Expand HIV, Hepatitis C, PrEP services in a behavioral health setting.
- Expand evidence-based mental health and substance use disorder treatment that are trauma-informed.
- Expand peer support services to promote engagement and retention.
- Expand outreach to link patients to testing, behavioral health, HIV and Hepatitis C care and prevention.
- Expand case management to coordinate linkage of behavioral health to primary care and specialty services.
