There is no cure for asthma, but it can be managed. We will work with you to develop an asthma action plan, learn your asthma triggers and symptoms, and help you stay as active and healthy as possible. Working with your health care team will help you learn how to best manage your asthma. Whitney Young Health is the lead agency for the Asthma Coalition of the Capital Region (ACCR), a multi-partner effort to decrease asthma morbidity and mortality in neighborhoods throughout the Capital Region.

We have credentialed and trained staff ready to serve the needs of patients with infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C. We offer testing, medical management, and counseling. The Community Prevention and Treatment Services (CPTS) department program is funded by a New York State grant.

The Dental Department provides full mouth x-rays, prophylaxis (cleaning), fluoride treatment, dental health education, fillings, extractions, partial and full dentures and emergency treatment. We can show you the best ways to brush and floss; share information about the best foods to eat and those to avoid for good tooth health; and how to take good care of your teeth, gums and mouth.
Dental services are available at the Albany Dental Practice and the Troy and Watervliet Health Centers.

Diabetes self-management education and training aims to help people with or at risk for diabetes gain the knowledge and skills needed to modify their behavior and successfully self-manage the disease and its related conditions. Diabetes education at Whitney Young Health is culturally appropriate and seeks to empower our patients to achieve optimal health status, attain a better quality of life, and reduce the need for costly health care.
We follow the guidelines of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the National Standards of Diabetes Self-Management Education, as well as American Association of Diabetes Educators (ADDE) guidelines for the Practice of Diabetes Self-Management Education and Training (DSME/T).

Whitney Young Health works with College Parkside Pharmacy, Walgreens, Rite Aid and Aureus Specialty Pharmacy to offer prescriptions at reduced costs for current Whitney Young Health patients. For more information, please speak to your provider.
To help children grow up with books and a love of reading, Whitney Young Health provides age appropriate books to children at well-child visits and educates parents about how to read to their children.

At Whitney Young Health's Family Alcoholism and Chemical Treatment Services (FACTS) Program, you'll get the support and guidance you need to take control of your life again or get lifesaving information for someone you care about. Whitney Young Health's addictions programs are certified by The New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS).

Whitney Young Health would like to help you complete the Immigration or Refugee physical process as easily as possible. Your physical and follow-up consist of three visits, generally over a three week period. These visits are necessary to complete your health assessment and physical, to read the tuberculosis test and to follow-up on laboratory tests and immunizations.
Services are currently only available at the Albany Health Center. Immigration Health, which requires a Civil Surgeon, is available only for children. Refugee Health is available for children and adults.
Whitney Young Health's patient-centered model addresses all of a patient's needs – medical, dental and behavioral. To better serve clients with substance abuse and mental health issues, Whitney Young Health offers primary care services specifically for clients of MMTP & FACTS and Equinox, Inc. Reversely, our primary care providers ensure that patients identified to have substance or mental health issues are connected to treatment.

Methadone maintenance is a long-term therapeutic intervention for addiction to heroin and other opiates. Methadone is a synthetic narcotic medication that blocks heroin effects and reduces the craving for other narcotics. our MMTP Program is accredited by the Joint Commission.

Our caring doctors, nurses, and midwives will care for you throughout your pregnancy, teach you about pregnancy care, and talk with you about family planning. Obtaining care early in your pregnancy is important to you and your baby. Call us as soon as you suspect you are pregnant. Obstetrical care is available to our primary care patients.

An on-site laboratory for routine blood draws is available to current Whitney Young Health patients. The while some of this testing is done by LapCorp, many specimens are sent out to a full-service laboratory. Please be advised that these lab bills are billed separately, not by Whitney Young Health. You are responsible for payment to the off-site lab providing that service

Seal a Smile provides dental hygienist services including dental screenings, fluoride treatments, cleanings, and more. Services are offered to over 52 schools, daycare centers, and camps throughout Albany and Rensselaer counties.

Whitney Young Health also uses the Language Line to assist with our other non-English speakers. The Language Line offers translation in more than 400 languages.
Whitney Young Health is one of the largest providers of travel immunizations in the Capital Region. If you are planning a trip abroad for vacation, work or school, we are here to help. You should schedule your travel immunizations at least 4-6 weeks before your trip, especially if you will need a series of injections. Be aware that it takes about two full weeks for full immunity (protection from disease) to develop.

Veggie Rx is just what it sounds like: a doctor-ordered vegetable prescription! Since 2011, Whitney Young Health has collaborated with Capital Roots to help patients who may be most in need of access to fresh food have it. Patients who have chronic health issues, such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity are able to meet with Whitney Young Health nutritionists and be connected to the Veggie Rx program.
Patients receive coupons which they can redeem for fresh food on board the Veggie Mobile® and Veggie Mobile® Sprout. With nearly 35 stops across the Capital Region, there is a good chance there is a mobile market stop in a patient's neighborhood.

Whitney Young Health offers vision services spanning both ophthalmology and optometry for adults and children.
Vision Services are available at the Albany Health Center.
Whitney on Wheels, our mobile health unit, offers comprehensive and coordinated primary and preventive health systems, including routine management of chronic illness.
Whitney on Wheels currently visits over a dozen schools and community organizations.
WIC (Women, Infants and Children) is a health and nutrition program for pregnant, post-partum and breastfeeding women, infants and children up to the age of five. WIC participants have longer, healthier pregnancies and fewer premature births.
WIC is located at the Albany Health Center and has limited days/hours at the Whitney Young Health Administrative Office in Watervliet.
