World AIDS Day 2016, What You Need to Know

What is World AIDS Day?

Since 1988, World AIDS Day is held on the 1st December each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died.

Ending the Epidemic

New York State Governor, Andrew Cuomo in conjunction with the NYS Department of Health has pledged to end the AIDS epidemic by 2020 with this three-point plan.

  • Identifies persons with HIV who remain undiagnosed and link them to health care.
  • Links and retains persons diagnosed with HIV in health care to maximize virus suppression so they remain healthy and prevent further transmission.
  • Facilitates access to Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for high-risk persons to keep them HIV negative

This plan will move from New York having a history of the worst HIV epidemic in the country, to a future with those infected with HIV, a rarity or those living with the disease to have a normal lifespan.

How Can You Show Support?
