Methadone Maintenance Treatment Program

Developed in 1964, methadone maintenance is a long-term therapeutic intervention for addiction to heroin and other opiates. Methadone is a synthetic narcotic medication that blocks heroin effects and reduces the craving for other narcotics.

Methadone treatment at Whitney Young plays a pivotal role in:

  • Stabilizing the lives of patients and dramatically decreasing heroin and non-narcotic drug use.
  • Markedly decreasing the negative impact of illegal behaviors to obtain drugs. The longer the patient is involved with methadone treatment, the greater the decrease in these behaviors.
  • Reducing behaviors associated with risk of exposure to and spread of HIV and other infectious diseases such as hepatitis C.
  • Improving effective use of health services and overall health outlook, social productivity and employability.

Admission is based on age, addiction history, and addiction type and past treatment history.

MMTP offers the following support services:

  • Individual and family counseling
