Meet Shauna! Whitney Young Health’s New Volunteer RN

This week is National Healthcare Volunteer Week and Whitney Young Health would like to introduce to our volunteers that have been tremendously helpful and have made such a positive difference in their short time as volunteers here. Everyone – meet Shauna!

Shauna is a recently retired RN after working as a nurse for over 35 years at Albany Medical Center, where she specialized in their Pediatrics department, working in the Pediatric ICU and Post Anesthesia Care. Here at Whitney Young Health, Shauna will be volunteering on our mobile health unit, Whitney on Wheels, which visits local schools and other community programs to provide primary care services.

When we asked Shauna why she decided to spend part of her retirement volunteering at Whitney Young Health she said she “…admired Whitney Young Health’s outreach to the community and I now have an opportunity to participate in the centers mission.”

This is not the first time Shauna has volunteered her time in a healthcare setting. Her most memorable volunteering experience was “…being a team member of a plastic surgery group. I participated in multiple trips to the Dominican Republic where our team of doctors performed life changing surgeries on children including cleft lip and palate repairs, and other remediations of deformities. These procedures were done free of charge. It was very gratifying knowing that because of these surgical repairs, each of these children and their families would be able to lead more normal lives without the fear of being ostracized.”

When she’s not volunteering for Whitney Young Health, Shauna likes to spend time with her husband, her two children and her two grandchildren. She also has a bleeding heart when it comes to animals and has adopted rescue animals. Shauna also loves to travel and explore new places.

We are so excited to have Shauna on board with us and believe her experience as Pediatric RN will be invaluable to us and our patients!

Whitney Young Health has SEVEN opportunities for those who wish to volunteer in a diverse, health care setting!

On May 17th, May 24th and June 7th, from 5:00 – 7:00pm, WYH will be hosting three Asthma Fairs at our Albany Health Center for local students and their families to attend. The events will focus on healthy breathing and healthy living. We will have food, multiple activities and a DJ!

Duties include: Set-up and break down assistance, manning multiple information tables, handing out goodie bags, and running the raffle table.

If you have experience in the medical field, or want to volunteer in a non-medical capacity, Whitney Young Health has openings! For more information and to fill out the application, contact Deshaya, our Volunteer Program Manager at dwilliams@wmyhealth.org
